CAGI – Cantina Giubiasco SA is one of the most important winemakers in Ticino. Its centennial history is closely linked to that of the noble Merlot grape.
Established in 1929 to strengthen the then fragile regional winemaking sector, the Cantina di Giubiasco soon proved instrumental in modernizing viniculture and enhancing wine quality in the region.
CAGI crucially contributed, therefore, to raising grape-farming revenue and popularizing Ticino’s Merlot beyond its historical boundaries Today CAGI plays an important socio-economic role by producing excellent wine from the harvest of approximately 500 grape farmers. Close to 10 percent of its entire wine production is marketed in the canton of Ticino.

Almost all grapes processed by CAGI come from the Bellinzona and Locarno districts. Small quantities are delivered by producers from other areas of Ticino and from neighbouring Mesolcina (Canton of Grisons). In these areas CAGI works with old Merlot grapes from historical vineyards, which helps explain the outstanding reputation of its wines. CAGI also chose to diversify its production to meet evolving consumer preferences while safeguarding the regional age-old winemaking tradition. Harvested grapes are for the most part precious Merlot, which is the base for the production of excellent red, white and rosé wines. CAGI also started the successful tradition of vinification in white of Merlot grapes, now unanimously appreciated by consumers nationwide.
True to tradition, the Cantina produces red wines with excellent ageability such as the “AlbaViti” and the “Riserva”. Incessantly striving to make the best of the soil and climate of the region CAGI created the selection “Ronchi del Contado” comprising two grapes from the Bellinzona countryside aged in barriques; the Merlot grapes of Monte Carasso and Camorino. Both are wines of great structure ideally aged between 4 and 8 years. The vinification of unblended Bondola will contribute to safeguarding this ancient grape and the centuries old viticulture tradition associated with it. The Bondola is one of most ancient red grapes still cultivated in the region.
CAGI also consistently and intensely promotes and distributes regional Ticino wines all over Switzerland. CAGI only markets own-production wines with a great price-quality ratio. The products are mainly marketed locally, by way of a widespread and efficient distribution network. One quarter of the production is marketed in eastern Switzerland.
The Cantina headquarters also house and elegant and cozy wine shop where Director Adriano Petralli and wine expert Sergio Scalmanini will be proud to introduce you to our great wines.
